On March 25, a dialogue between internationally invited wise elders and young people living in Japan took place under the theme of peacebuilding, hosted by the Sasakawa Foundation and co-organized by Katawara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the forum, Representative Toda played the role of introducing the distinguished guests’ backgrounds and encouraging the young participants as they stepped up to engage in conversation. The two guests of honor were Dr. Muhammad Yunus \u2014 who until last month served as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government and is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate recognized for his pioneering work in microfinance \u2014 and Dr. Hassan Wirajuda, who served as Indonesia’s Foreign Minister from 2001 to 2009, played a central role in drafting the ASEAN Charter, and continues to be actively involved in conflict mediation around the world. The contrasting approaches of Dr. Yunus, who dedicated himself to poverty reduction by believing in the power of ordinary people, and Dr. Wirajuda, who worked on the diplomatic stage to strengthen friendly relations between nations, powerfully stimulated the intellect of the young attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a personal note, Representative Toda and Dr. Yunus are old acquaintances, and the forum offered a welcome opportunity to reconnect after twelve years apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
