Since it has not been widely reported in Japan, many of you may not know, but Cambodia is now in a border conflict with Thailand, which has become a serious source of concern for both countries. In August, Malaysia, as chair of ASEAN, stepped in to mediate, and President Trump also called for a ceasefire, so the situation began to calm down. However, it is still smoldering. People say a new war has broken out in Southeast Asia, which had been calm in the 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, and we will need to keep a close eye on it.

It began in May this year, when the two armies clashed near the Preah Vihear Temple on the border between the two countries, and one Cambodian soldier was killed. The temple is officially recognized by the international community as Cambodian territory, but the Thai side does not seem to accept this. Sporadic clashes continued after that, and in July they grew into a large-scale conflict. The Thai military sent F-16 fighter jets to attack Cambodian military positions, and the situation went beyond border skirmishes to what could fairly be called a war.

Around the Preah Vihear Temple

The Preah Vihear Temple and its surroundings (looking toward the Thai side)

Around the Preah Vihear Temple

The Preah Vihear Temple and its surroundings (looking toward the Thai side)

Phnom Penh is peaceful right now and nothing seems amiss, but an uneasy atmosphere has begun to spread across the country: imports from Thailand have stopped, customers no longer go to Thai-owned gas stations and convenience stores, and the boat races of the Water Festival, the country’s biggest event, have been canceled. In addition, 300,000 Cambodians who had gone to work in Thailand were forced to return home, and many still cannot find work. Once again the session was run as a youth-led dialogue, and people of a wide range of ages, from elementary school children to older adults, took part online.

We were also joined by two special guests, Igor Yevtushuk, Vice Chairman of NPO Japan-Ukraine Friendship Association KRAIANY, and Ichiro Hatanaka, Representative of the Future of Humanity Institute (P-ALS), who spoke about “the value of peace that you realize only once it is lost” and “the importance of making efforts to protect peace in everyday life.”

For details, please see our website: https://forum2050.com/2025/09/11/event20250911/

A Message to the Next Generation

At the end of the session, Takumi Ueshima, Auditor of Forum2050 (former Executive Director, JICA), spoke about the responsibilities of adults and the senior generation, from the perspective of “how children around the world, including in Japan, can play a leading role in co-creating a peaceful future.”

“Listening to what you young people said today, I felt hope for the future. I feel once again that our mission as the adult generation is to create an environment where young people can speak up and act with confidence.”

Voices of Participants

We received the following comments from participants.

“I was moved to see young people, from elementary school to university students, confidently facilitating the discussion. I really felt that thinking about peace is not ‘something special’ but an extension of everyday life.” (Educator in their 30s)

“The story from the person from Ukraine was heavy, but Hatanaka’s talk gave me strength to live. It made me think again that peace is not something to take for granted.” (High school participant)

“Watching the videos of children in Cambodia and Bangladesh, I really felt connected with children around the world.” (Elementary school participant)

Looking Ahead

TODA Takao, President of Forum2050 (former Vice President, JICA), spoke about the outlook: “By continuing to create spaces for youth-led dialogue like this, we want to widen the circle of people who see peace as ‘their own issue.'”

This session was a valuable opportunity to show that educational cooperation is not just support for developing countries; it also contributes greatly to the growth of young people in Japan and to raising their interest in the world. It was a meaningful session in which each participant was able to find their own “first step toward peace.”

Exchange Meeting with Georgia

On September 28, 2025, we held an exchange between Georgia and Japan! The “မင်္ဂလာပါ (Mingalaba)” at the beginning is a greeting meaning “hello” in Burmese. The language is known for its rounded, charming script.
I chose to major in Burmese because I love learning languages, and I also loved the Southeast Asian region itself.

At the language drama festival

At the language drama festival (I am fourth from the right)

My interest in Southeast Asia goes back to a study trip to Cambodia that I joined in high school.
At the time, I joined out of curiosity, wanting to visit all sorts of countries, but through the children with their sparkling smiles, the people in town who talked to me in such a friendly way, and the students who kindly taught me Khmer, I was drawn to the warmth of the Cambodian people. From then on, my interest in Southeast Asia and developing countries grew much stronger.

At university, I study not only Burmese but also, more broadly, the history, culture and society of the Southeast Asian region.
And this year, I finally fulfilled the dream I had held since before entering university: “to live in Southeast Asia while I’m a student.”

For four months, from February to June this year, I took part in an educational internship in Cambodia and lived together with local people.
I was hosted by a nursery school founded with the wish to “spread Japanese-style early childhood education,” and I carried out various activities based at the nursery school.

In the mornings I assisted with childcare, in the afternoons I did activities with elementary school children, and in my spare time I translated Japanese picture books and made teaching materials and crafts.
The nursery school had many Japanese teachers and lots of Japanese picture books, but very few picture books in Khmer, so it was hard for teachers who spoke only Khmer to read aloud to the children.

So, wanting “Cambodian children, too, to enjoy the world of picture books more,” I started translating picture books into Khmer.
Translating into Khmer, which I had only just started learning, was not easy, but I worked on it little by little and was able to complete several translated books over the four months.
Since returning to Japan I have kept translating whenever I find the time, and I plan to send the finished ones to the nursery school as data. I have found a way to support them even from far away.

Besides the nursery school, I also visited nearby free schools, orphanages, public elementary schools and other places.
The free school runs on donations, and children from poor families attend for free, to supplement Cambodia’s two-shift school system. Wanting “to share the joy of making things with children who rarely get art and craft classes” and “to contribute, even a little, to running the free school,” I planned a charity activity:
selling beaded accessories and goods that I made together with the children at a school festival in Japan.

Group photo after the art and craft activity

The children’s work

At first I was worried about whether people who had no interest in Cambodia or international cooperation would pick up the children’s work, and whether we could cover the production costs and the stall fee.
Even so, encouraged by the children’s smiles and the help of the many people who supported the activity, I was able to see it through.
In the end, everything we had prepared sold out, and we were able to donate about 50,000 yen.

Selling at the school festival

Selling at the school festival

I am glad that, through the children’s work, I was able to share Cambodia’s charm with many people.
What I can do on my own is small, but I believe that building up small activities like this widens the circle of cooperation.

Through my activities at the Forum, I hope to keep meeting many people and to share my thoughts on “international cooperation” and “peace.”

Thank you, and I look forward to your support.

Monthly Report from TODA Takao, President, Forum2050

Dear everyone,

The long, intense heat has gone, and just when autumn finally seemed to have arrived, there is already a hint of winter in the air.

I hope you are all keeping well.

As for Gaza, although all the surviving hostages have been released, the situation remains uncertain. As the attention of fickle international opinion drifts away, the people there are exhausted, and here too precious lives continue to be lost.

According to an overview of the world’s major research institutions on armed conflict (including incidents of organized violence), astonishingly, more than 100 conflicts are under way on this planet at this very moment.

“Why, and for what, do people kill each other?”

When I ask children this at schools,

some children say rather cynical things like,
“Humans are made to be fighting creatures in the first place, so it can’t be helped.” They have probably picked this up from hearing the adults around them say so.

Even children who say honestly,
“I want a peaceful future,”

are often at a loss when they are asked,
“If someone you love were killed by a person from the neighboring country, what would you do?” And some children show their hatred openly.

Today, the world has failed to break the cycle of hatred, and hatred is being reproduced in many parts of the world.
In the latter part of this month (September), I visited several schools.

The words the children spoke there were full of insight. Some children showed that they were seriously trying to bring their own intelligence to bear on the great question of “peace.”

“When I hear the argument that, if you have to choose between yourself and others, of course you come first, it confuses me. Because I don’t know which group (myself or others) to put the people I love in. My own happiness lies within the happiness of the people I love.”

“You shouldn’t answer the question ‘yourself or others’ easily. You should think about it after making clear what kind of situation it is.”

These are the words of a 6th grader in elementary school and a 1st-year junior high school student.

In general, when we adults (myself included) talk to children about the importance of “peace,” we think we have to break it down and speak simply, taking into account the limits of their understanding and knowledge. In terms of knowledge, that may clearly be true. On the other hand, when we try to have a more essential discussion about peace, one about the essence of the problems of human beings and human society, without assuming any particular level of knowledge, many children show intelligence and sensitivity that go far beyond what ordinary adults assume. That is my honest impression from continuing to visit schools.

Forum2050’s ultimate goal is to create a world in which children around the world connect across borders and across differences in culture, language and religion, learn from one another, care for one another, and co-create a peaceful future. It is to make sure that such a world is not a passing stroke of luck, but one in which peace is made solid in a sustainable way so that future generations can enjoy it. And to that end, it is to create a global infrastructure (a global public good) through which children around the world can get to know and learn from one another, making full use of the latest ICT (including PeaceTech, which has been growing in recent years).

For that purpose, we are now steadily visiting schools and supporting international exchange among children. Through these activities, we are building up learning and experience about what moves children’s hearts and helps them grow, and how to raise their interest in, and motivation to act toward, co-creating a peaceful future. And in the not-too-distant future, based on that knowledge and learning, we will move on to the basic design of an infrastructure that lets children around the world keep up exchanges that are fun, engaging, safe and sustainable.

We have only just begun to walk a tiny part of a very long road, but thanks to you we have been invited by many schools, local governments and others, and over these two years we have been able to engage with more than 8,000 children. In Wako City, Saitama Prefecture, we worked with the city, which strongly wishes to put into practice the Peace City Declaration it created together with its citizens, and we were able to hold dialogues with all the students (about 1,400 in total) of the city’s public junior high schools (three schools in all). Our activities are spreading from points to lines, and, though still small, from lines to a whole area. That we can report this kind of development is thanks to all of you who give us your valuable support.

Once again, I thank you most deeply.

Finally, as autumn deepens and the chill of the mornings and evenings hints at the coming of winter, please take very good care of yourselves. We look forward to your continued support.

Oct 20, 2025
In Koenji, Suginami City
TODA Takao
Email: toda@forum2050.com

Inquiries and Consultations | Newsletter Registration

Forum2050 operates under the concept of ‘Children of the World: Each Child’s Vision for the Future Shapes Humanity’s Destiny,’ collaborating with businesses, schools, educational institutions, and others.
